Looking for the easiest way to upgrade your home appearance? Wainscoting is the best choice. It’s like a decorative wall paneling that protects your walls and makes your place even more attractive. You can install them according to your preference, i.e., at chair-rail height or to the full height of your walls.
These come in a wide range of designs and materials, from classic wood to contemporary MDF. Besides these options, you can also customize it in any color palette by painting or staining. If you are still confused about options, here I will share my home renovation project experience with Wainscoting.
How it all Begins?
In the beginning, I was totally a confused mess, like you! My mind seemed a bit overwhelming. So, I decided to take some ideas from professionals and followed different Instagram and Facebook pages to find the best wainscoting designs that pleased my eyes at first sight. Now, I will discuss each of my journey steps with you one by one. Keeping reading!
How I Finalize the Design of Wainscoting For My Home?
I started by considering a number of alternative styles, including raised panel, flat panel, Overlay, beadboard, and many more. After looking at many options, I narrowed it down to two or three that I really liked: raised panel and beadboard.
After looking at my living room sizes, beadboard seems a perfect choice as it makes the room look bigger. But for you, I will explain the rest of the designs so that it becomes easier for you to narrow down an ideal option for your space.
- Raised Panel: A classic design element that gives homes a royal feel. The curved margins of this wainscoting style elevate the panel decoratively. Raised panel wainscoting can be doubled to make it taller than its regular height of 30–40 inches.
- Flat Panel: Adding such simple beauty can give any room a more modern look. Flat panels usually start with a clean baseboard, then the flat panels and vertical stiles, and then a top rail and chair rail at the top.
- Beadboard: It is made up of thin vertical pieces that are used in kitchens and bathrooms. Beadboard can be used with other types of wainscoting, such as flat panels.
- Overlay: Such panels often look like wainscoting with raised panels, but they can be much more detailed. The way they are constructed, with a wood overlay centered between rails and styles, overlays have more room for details.
- Board and batten: A bold, simplistic Craftsman style is embraced by board and batten paneling. This wainscoting can reach a height of six feet and is made of flat panels and vertical battens.

It Helps me in Choosing The Perfect Material
I didn’t have much idea about wainscoting materials, so I hired a home interior designer for guidance. Together, we discussed materials options available, like MDF, PVC, and wood.
After considering what I actually dream of and how much I want to spend.
According to my preference, MDF seems as the best material for my wainscoting project.

Color And Finish Selection
This part was a thoughtful process of my entire project! I imagined how it goes with my current room’s colors like whether blends all together or stands out with the rest decor.
After considering all these options, I decided on a soft cream color for my wainscoting. It perfectly matched my room’s style, adding a warm and inviting touch.

Consider Height And Proportion
My space wall was about 8 feet tall, so I decided on a wainscoting height of 3 feet. After my personal opinion, and decided to take another advice from a home interior expert to ensure it was the right choice.
They confirmed that a wainscoting height of 3 feet would work well for my wall’s height, creating a balanced and visually appealing look.
